Still the money men stare into the long dead past, counting the cash with their bloodstained hands, whistling over our screams. And the media machine turns our fear into hate, puts knives in our hands and points us at our neighbours, whispering “they’re the reason you’re poor, they’re the reason you’re dying, they’re the reason your life is empty”… We eat what is beautiful, burn what is life sustaining, hate what is true. Ignorance is no longer an excuse – it’s time to wake up before they feed us all into the flames.
There are many bands with memorable slogans, who are quick to wave the flag of the latest cause célèbre and pay lip service to the issues of the day. There are far fewer who live by their beliefs, who promote their message with a loud, unwavering voice no matter how the tide of public opinion turns. There are even fewer who can pair their message with music every bit as confrontational, defiant and incendiary as their words. The UK’s Utilitarian are one of the few – and new album Gaslights is their most explosive, devastating release to date. As they rage against capitalism, discrimination, exploitation of the weak and innocent, greed and hatred they unleash rampaging riffs and heart stirring choruses. The power of extreme metal collides with the fury and energy of hardcore punk and a deluge of instantly addictive, adrenaline packed songs rain down. Featuring some searing solos from Ol Drake of Evile on the crunching crossover of ‘Hatetriarchy’ and the mountainous drumming of Andy Whale (ex-Bolt Thrower, ex-Memoriam) on the menacing ‘The Weight’ and the album’s storming title track, Gaslights is a staggering forearm smash to the face of the establishment.
On April 7th Utilitarian will release Gaslights not on CD, but as a book containing not only all the song lyrics, but also explanations of the stance taken in each song and a download code for the most essential ingredient in the Utilitarian Molotov cocktail – the music. Explaining the choice to sell books rather than CDs the band’s vocalist, Jon Crowder says: “We're selling these instead of CD's as they're better for the environment and they're a strong way of getting our message out there along with the music.” With Gaslights Utilitarian have proved again that passionate political thinking never sounds better than when it’s delivered in the form of pit inducing anthems.
