It was five years ago that they walked out of the Arizona deserts, figures shimmering in the heat. In a moment they stood before us and cast the puzzle box of Pestilence Reborn at our feet. Then without word or discernible movement they were once again part of the mirage manipulated horizon. Thoughtless and careless, mesmerized by this unlooked for gift, we reached for the box, eager fingers caressing symbols and sigils that seemed to excrete sickness through our skin…and then the pain began, the nightmares of hook and claw and barbed wire embrace…an eternity of agony.
Now screams become silence…and they are here again, the desert sun at their backs. They offer us a glass of emerald liquid that seems to move within the clear walls that surround it. We drink, we swallow…we are undone.In truth, Phoenix residents Deadspawn haven’t been silent since their Pestilence Reborn debut album appeared in 2020; there’s been a single, a split release with Swarm Of Serpents and a rough and raw live outing – Live At The Beast 2023. However what fans have really been waiting for is a second full length studio album…and now it is here. Bile Of The Gods is a staggering outpouring of blackened death metal, as hypnotic as it is devastating. From the triumphant announcement of their return that is opener ‘Unsleep’ to the many layered masterpiece of extremity and terror, ‘Bile Of The Gods’ itself, that concludes this stunning album, this is an utterly absorbing listening experience. Time stands still as you are swept through this array of secrets and dark wonders. Be it the arcane spellcraft and devastating power of ‘Eyes Of Savior’ or ‘Eminence Upon The Throne’, a collision of textures, melodies and wicked riffs that dance like spiders across your frozen face, Bile Of The Gods is an all encompassing kingdom of nightmares. Breathtakingly accomplished in its presentation, Bile Of The Gods is the work of musicians who are masters of their craft. There is an unearthly vitality that writhes through each individual performance and the resulting atmosphere is haunting. The set of songs that Deadspawn crafted for Bile Of The Gods deserved to be presented in the best possible manner. With this in mind the band sought out the mixing and mastering skills of Phil Pluskota, who has worked with Dååth, Wormhole, Vulvodynia and many more, to make sure that the full impactful nature of every note, every commanding word could be appreciated. And to put the final seal of quality upon their infernal creation? There was only one artist to call upon for the cover image of Bile Of The Gods – Jon Zig (Deeds Of Flesh, Defeated Sanity, Gorgasm etc). His striking imagery perfectly complements the majestic sounds that lurk beneath it. Bile Of The Gods will be unleashed on January 24th and be assured, Deadspawn have delivered everything you could wish for in terms of epic, imaginative, decimating blackened death metal.
