At the heart of a wasteland, long miles from the intrusive blemish of artificial light, a sky of velvet darkness is dusted with a myriad of stars. In the untainted silence they gaze down in grim anticipation at a circle of stones in a place with no name. And between the stones a fine dust of cold ashes begins to stir, inviting a stain of congealed blood, which has never dried despite the endless passings of the sun, to dance. Together they start to spin, gathering pace, forming a whispering vortex in the desert night. As the maelstrom of dirt begins to rise and the distant stars seem to hold their breath, the earth splits asunder and a triumphant fountain of flame erupts. A vast and grotesque form of many teeth and many limbs breaks free from the clutches of its grave, roaring its defiance at those who presumed its death too soon…
It may have been nearly a dozen years since Spain’s death metal titans, Avulsed, last released a full length album of new material – 2013s Ritual Zombi – but only a fool would have turned their back and thought the band formed by vocalist Dave Rotten back in 1991 were out for the count. Revitalised by some key line-up changes, Avulsed have risen from their slough of despond with the utterly devastating and aptly named, Phoenix Cryptobiosis. Right from the very beginning of opening instrumental, ‘Limbs Regeneration’, you can sense that something special is about to be unleashed…and with ‘Lacerate To Dominate’ the cobwebs of the last decade are not just swept away, they are incinerated! Avulsed have always been known for their irresistible live prowess and the glorious brute force of early albums like Stabwound Orgasm and Gorespattered Suicide, but with Phoenix Cryptobiosis they have attained a new level. There’s a maturity to the song writing, a dark atmosphere of measured horror, inescapable hooks and an infusion of wicked excitement. There is no let up from start to finish, no faltering in the deadly intent – this is virulent poison to the last drop, deadly to the end. You’ll find new highlights with every listen to this genre defining album...the first time you might be caught by the cascading, carnivorous riffing of ‘Unrotted’ and its choruses that entrench themselves in your mind, or destroyed by the imperious vocal display on ‘Guts Of The Gore Gods’; the second time it might be the drum intro of ‘Devotion For Putrefaction’ that sends shocks through your neurons to your nerve endings and on the third maybe the wonderfully mangled and broken death metal supremacy of ‘Bio-Cadaver’ will dissect you and lay your spirit bare. Each track has a wealth of haunted vaults to explore and you’ll just want the bloodshed to keep on coming.
With the new line-up in exhilarating form and a final touch of gore soaked magic applied by the mastering of Davide Billia (Beheaded, Devangelic, Posthuman Abomination etc), Phoenix Cryptobiosis represents Avulsed at their very, very best. This is everything you could desire from an unwavering, undiluted death metal album in this age of fractured loyalties and pandering to the thin-blooded masses.
